Frequently asked questions

Do schools have to teach SPHE in Transition Year?

Yes. Wellbeing remains a key element of Senior Cycle and SPHE plays an important role in supporting students' personal, social and health education during Transition Year. Schools are expected to provide an SPHE programme that reflects the aims and principles of the Transition Year Programme Statement and meets the needs of their students.

Is there a prescribed SPHE specification for Transition Year?

No. Unlike Junior Cycle SPHE, there is no prescribed national specification for Transition Year SPHE. Schools have flexibility to design a programme that reflects the ethos of Transition Year, responds to student needs and supports the development of key competencies and wellbeing.

Do I have to teach every chapter in SPHE for Transition Year?

No. The resource has been designed to be flexible. All students should complete the Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) module, while teachers can choose from the remaining modules according to their school's programme, students' interests and the time available.

Can schools teach the modules in a different order?

Yes. The modules are designed to stand alone, so teachers can deliver them in the sequence that best suits their Transition Year programme and school calendar.

How do I choose which modules to teach?

Consider:

  • the needs and interests of your students
  • the amount of timetable time available
  • your school's existing Transition Year programme
  • opportunities to link with other TY activities or events (e.g. work experience, wellbeing week, internet safety initiatives or community projects).

Does the book support the aims of the new Transition Year Programme Statement?

Yes. The lessons encourage students to develop independence, reflect on their learning, engage in discussion, explore real-world issues and build practical life skills.
